2007 Display Opportunities Show Descriptions

2007 American Library Association Midwinter Conference, Seattle, WA—Jan. 20-23
The American Library Association, the oldest and largest library association in the world, will hold its 2007 Midwinter Conference in Seattle, WA. With almost 110,000 public, school, college and university libraries in the U.S., national book shows such as the ALA-Midwinter conference provide exposure to this multi-billion dollar market.

ALA-Midwinter provides publishers a unique opportunity to expose their titles to libraries nationwide. Attending this meeting will be librarians at the highest levels of their libraries from across the nation with the power to make purchasing decisions.

Due to our seniority with ALA, we have once again secured a prime location at the entrance to the exhibit hall. This will give your publications maximum exposure to the thousands of librarians expected to attend.

Your titles will be displayed prominently within our exhibit and organized by the Dewey Decimal System. This is the preferred method of reviewing titles by librarians. All books will have a number affixed to the front cover of the book which will correspond to the exhibit catalog we prepare that all lists all titles on display for the show. This enables librarians to quickly review a large number of titles and take away with them a record of what they saw.

Michigan Reading Association, Grand Rapids, MI—March 10-12, 2007
Reach thousands of teachers in Michigan. Materials appropriate would be k-12 materials as well as educational books. MIRA attracts thousands of teachers, librarians, and media specialists, all looking to improve or build upon their classroom or library collections, as well as to purchase books for their personal libraries.

Association of College and Research Libraries, Baltimore, MD—March 29-April 1, 2007
The ACRL is a division of the American Library Association that convenes once every two years. 3,000+ attendees from universities, research facilities and private companies will come to Baltimore in 2007 to see new titles and online services offered in their academic and scholarly field.  The exhibits are well run and continually have large blocks of no-conflict time for the attendees to view the products on the show floor.  In 2005, most of the exhibitors left the show with positive comments about the activity at the conference as well as the quality of the attendees they saw.  Our 21st time special exhibit highlighting Choice Magazines Outstanding Academic Titles is a favorite among the librarians who attend.

Florida Library Association, Orlando, FL—April 10-12, 2007
Due to CBE’s continued participation at FLLA, we always receive prime location for our display. The audience for this show is primarily public librarians, with librarians from academic and other specialized libraries attending. Despite the stereotype of Florida as mainly an aged community, the actual demographics of the state represent all ages. Children’s picture books, fiction, and non-fiction are always sought after titles at FLLA. Recent years have seen good changes for the show and CBE is always very busy during no-conflict times and has steady traffic during the sessions.

Texas Library Association, San Antonio, TX—April 12-14, 2007
The cream of the crop of regional conferences, and some publishers say the best show they attend. The exhibit staff does an excellent job of keeping attendees on the exhibit floor. While public librarians are in meetings, school librarians have free time to be at the exhibits, and vice versa. Despite what you may have heard, this show is not only for children’s books. Frequently, public librarians have commented how happy they are to see adult level material at our display in all subject areas.

Pennsylvania School Library Association, Hershey, PA—April 13-14, 2007
This conference attracts school librarians (K-12) from Pennsylvania. PSLA is a well organized association, who takes into account the needs of each exhibitor. CBE is always given prime location in the exhibit hall, as we continue to host the most popular display on the floor. These school librarians love the opportunity to view titles from both large and small publishers at one stop. In 2006, our CBE rep was busy even after the show ended, as attendees asked to continue to view the collection as our equipment was being packed. It’s becoming a PSLA tradition for attendees to stay even after the show has ended to view the collection as we pack it up.

London Book Fair, London, England—April 16-18, 2007

This is the premier spring International publishing event for rights and titles. In April 2007, approximately 23,000 publishers, booksellers, literary agents, librarians, media and industry suppliers from over 100 countries will come together to network and generate business in London.

Over the past few years, London Book Fair has grown tremendously in both stature and reputation.  There are now 20% more exhibitors and 60% more international visitors making this a true world leader in publishing exhibitions.  LBF has outgrown their original venue, the Olympia Exhibition Center, and will move to the new state-of-the-art ExCel Exhibition Center in the London Docklands.

The Combined Book Exhibit and its sister company, the American Collective Stand was one of the first companies to choose their new location on the show floor. We are located at one of the main entrances between general publishing and the huge children’s section. The Combined Book Exhibit will be located very near to Ingram International, National Book Network, Publishers Weekly and many other major publishing houses, all of who are participating in the American Collective Stand. We anticipate heavy traffic in and around our area. Space is very limited, so you need to act fast.

Connecticut Library Association, Hartford, CT—April 17-18, 2007
The intimate atmosphere of the CTLA exhibit hall allows attendees to spend more time at each exhibit. The audience for CTLA is typical for a library show, with the majority coming from public libraries, with a fair number of attendees from academic and special libraries as well. Books for all ages are actively reviewed. The Connecticut legislature and local communities are known to be highly supportive of their public library system. In 2006, over 1,200 people flocked to New Haven and the hall was more mobbed than ever before. Most exhibitors think that this is indicative of the positive outlook of the librarians in Connecticut. CBE is always the largest exhibitor on the floor and attracts nearly every librarian on the exhibit floor.

New Jersey Library Association, Long Branch, NJ—April 24-25, 2007
Similar to the intimacy of Connecticut Library, NJLA allows attendees to spend quality time at all exhibits, especially CBE, who is always the largest and most popular exhibitor on the floor. 75% of the attendees are from public libraries; 25% are from school libraries. Being so close to the New York, Metropolitan area, this conference has a lot of librarians whose patrons have varying needs and interests. The New Jersey Library Association organizers always make sure the librarians attend the exhibits through no-conflict exhibit hours, coffee breaks, and ice-cream socials on the exhibit floor.

BookExpo America, New York, NY— June 1-3, 2007
Attended by “everyone who’s anyone” in the world of bookselling, BEA attracts over 50,000 buyers and sellers from around the world. It is the only industry event covering the entire scope of book publishing from the U.S. and the world, all in one place, with more than 2,000 exhibits, 500 authors, and over 100 conference sessions. This is the largest book show opportunity in the United States and is the end all be all of book shows. If you are looking to connect with the any and all the major U.S. publishers, this is the place to meet and greet.

American Library Association Annual Conference, Washington, D.C.—June 23-26, 2007

ALA’s annual conference is the largest meeting of librarians in the world, drawing a broad audience from the U.S. Publishers will find the most diverse audience for their products in the library market. Attendance regularly approaches 25,000, with many coming solely to see exhibits.

Most of the attendees have purchasing authority and for many this is the only show they attend. Through its 58,000 members, the ALA serves as a resource for public, academic, private and school libraries, and is responsible for accreditation of library school programs.

Librarians who attend the Annual Conference include leaders from public, academic, school, private and special libraries. Attendees also include the Association Executive Board, the budget assembly, councilors, members of the executive boards of the divisions and round tables, and officers of committees and sections.

Beijing Book Fair Beijing, China—August 30-September 3, 2007
Our display at the 2006 BBF was a huge success. Over 200 companies participated with publishers sending hundreds of people to attend. The 2007 BBF should be even better! The warm reception from the Chinese people at the fair was overwhelming. Thousands of attendees visited the exhibit hall we were located in, and every catalog we sent was picked up by shows end.

The Chinese market is the new frontier and the next big market for years to come. With 1.2 billion people, China is poised to become the biggest market in the world, with English language materials leading the way. Books in most all subject categories are appropriate.
CBE will exhibit with our sister company, The American Collective Stand. Our display will be more than 1200 square feet and comprise individual stands for companies sending their own personnel, include individual Panel displays, Publisher Shelves and individual titles for those who cannot attend. We will take all inquiries, both for sales and rights, and send them to you after we return. Space is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Frankfurt Book Fair, Frankfurt, Germany—October 10-14, 2007

Over 6,600 exhibitors participate with over 300,000 in attendance. International visitors come to Frankfurt from 101 different countries. Practically every form of print media is sought out at this fair. Attendee interest ranges from books and CD-ROM’s to journals, magazines, audio, and even calendars and postcards. The American Collective Stand has been exhibiting at the Frankfurt Book Fair for more than 30 years and occupies the largest amount of space at the Fair. We are located in the same row as Random House, Simon and Schuster, Rodale and many other major publishing houses.

Ohio Library Council, Columbus, OH—October 10-12, 2007

The OLC has traditionally been scheduled in the spring, however, they have made the change to hold a three day conference in the fall. Ohio is one of the top ranked states in per-capita spending, and the selector librarians who attend this show are the decision makers in terms of purchases made for their libraries. Don’t miss this show!

Illinois Library Association, Springfield, IL—October 10-12, 2007
This show traditionally draws the largest attendance figures in the state! Record attendance of over 2,200 was established when the conference was held there last. Public, school and academic librarians all attend. Reference materials in all subject areas, literature and children’s books are just a few of their areas of interest.

The librarians who attend take this conference very seriously and have consistently shown that they need to visit the exhibits to see new products and services. Typical of today’s times, selector librarians find it increasingly important to “see the book before buying it”.

New England Library Association, Sturbridge, MA—October 14-16, 2007
Attracting librarians from all of the New England States, this show has consistently provided our participating publishers with exposure of their titles to a good representation of librarians from seven states. CBE is frequently noted as the most popular exhibit by the attendees.

CBE always has prime location and the librarians make sure they allocate blocks of time to go through the titles on display. Public and school librarians are the ones who attend this show and have an interest in a very broad selection of subject matters ranging from scholarly and reference, to history, to literature to children’s books.

Pennsylvania Library Association, State College, PA—October 15-16, 2007
The Pennsylvania Library Association has always been a show where our exhibit is heavily trafficked. The state ranks high in funding for public libraries in the US. This association invites librarians not only from public libraries but also from academic institutions and school libraries. Our entire collection of titles is heavily reviewed showing the broad interests and needs of the attendees. Librarians make a point to stop at our booth, pick up our exhibit catalog and review the titles on display. This is an active show with librarians showing very strong support for the exhibits.

New York Library Association, Buffalo, NY—October 18-19, 2007

This association is well organized and its conference has a substantial block of no-conflict time allowing attendees to spend quality time looking at the books. All subject areas are actively reviewed ranging from reference to trade to children’s books. Our popularity is illustrated by having won the Best Multiple Booth 6 times over the past 14 years. New York is a large state and the total money available to librarians throughout the entire state is a substantial amount.

American Assn. of School Libraries, Reno, NV—October 25-28, 2007

The AASL is a division of the American Library Association and convenes once every two years.  Over 3,000 librarians are expected to come to Reno this year.  The association has planned large blocks of no conflict time allowing librarians the time they need to view all the books on the show floor. Books for grades K-12 are appropriate for the school librarians, administrators and media specialists who will attend this important conference.  Librarians attending are usually active in their association and national advocates for bettering school libraries.  In addition to the professional meetings they attend, the exhibits are vitally important to them, as this may be the only opportunity for them to see, first hand, all the new titles on display. AASL is a must show for any publisher who published books for the K-12 market.

California Library Association, Long Beach, CA—October 26-28, 2007

CLA’s membership is over 2,400 strong. All types of library professionals are involved. People attending the show each year are involved in actual purchasing decisions or have the strong recommendation authority. The conference is a resource to learn about new ideas and products.

Having exhibited there for more than 30 years, CBE always received prime location and attracts the attendees to review the titles on display. Librarians really appreciate the opportunity to see the books from larger houses and smaller independent presses alike.

New York State Reading Association, Saratoga Springs, NY—November 7-9, 2007

Recognizing the need to give our publishers the opportunity to show their titles to educators, this show has been on our schedule for the past 30 years. With the school year already in full gear, these educators come to see new titles that will be useful in their classrooms. Accordingly, this can be done after they have had the opportunity to determine the specific needs of their classes and pupils for that school year. Our exhibit catalogs are used to mark titles which these teachers will recommend their libraries to purchase or will use their individual school discretionary funding to buy for immediate use. These educators are looking for materials in all subject categories at the K-12 levels, including professional materials.
